THE INTERPRETIVE HOUSE

Professor Tom Di Santo - 2016

The Interpretive House is a collection of perspectives within Los Angeles. Artists, creators and community members will use the facilities to collaborate and share ideas. Located in the Baldwin Hills, overlooking the Inglewood Oil Fields, the complex will house an artist retreat, studios and galleries to share their creations with the city. The site itself offers a unique perspective of Los Angeles providing a panorama of the city from an atypical location. Situated between public parks, residences and commercial oil fields, the Baldwin Hills also sits on socio-economic divides between Culver City, Ladera Heights and Crenshaw. This epicenter allows for architecture to bridge together individuals and the community.

PIVOTAL GROUNDS

In Collaboration With Mariana Diaz

Professor Tom Fowler -  2014

A mix-use development in Bronx, NY with a focus on creating a sense of community. The over arching spiral gesture helps evoke ideas of coming together through different means as the three towers colide to form the central gathering space. The mix of residential, commercial and performance spaces creates a village like atmosphere that is encapsulated in the spiralling form to bring people together while also having a positive impact throughout the neighborhood.

DUALITIES OF DANCE

Professor Heidi Ostergaard - 2015

This structure is a dance performance hall that is located partially within the historic Cisterns of Copenhagen. The project focuses on the relationship between the audience and the performer. There are two performance halls that oppose one another in function, materiality and atmosphere. The formal stage is embedded into the rectilinear grid of the concrete cisterns. It is a traditional take on the way dance is performed and observed with the two user groups separated. The experimental stage emerges from the earth in contrast and is an open space. This allows for the audience members and dancers to intertwine and create new relationships. The structure of the addition is a lightweight timber that has the ability to open and be reconfigured depending on use.

PASSAGE OF LIFE AND DEATH

Professor Heidi Ostergaard - 2015

This structure aims to create a secular place to perform rituals celebrating life and death. The building is placed in the landscape of Copenhagen's Sondermarken park and is meant to be used by all of it's citizens. The project uses contrast to create a range of dynamic spaces that vary from light to dark and intimate to formal.

CHUBBY CHAIR

Professor Tom DiSanto - 2015

A entry in the Vellum Furniture Competition 2015. This chair was constructed of reclaimed walnut using traditional furniture making methods. Each element of the piece was constructed without the use of digital tools. Its chubby proportions and cozy materiality allow for a high level of comfort.

MAKER FAIRE PAVILION

In Collaboration With Joanne Kim and Natalie Belous

Professor Tom Fowler  - 2014

A competition entry for the central pavilion for the Mini Maker Faire in San Luis Obispo. It embodies the theme “Making Stories, Making Community” by allowing participants to share their stories with others and by doing so create a greater sense of the community. The construct acts as a trading post to leave messages and small objects regarding to things others have made and learned from the fair.

SHELL CREEK WILDFLOWER INTERPRETIVE CENTER

Professor Richard Schmidt - 2013

This complex creates a fluid relationship between the built environment and the beauty of the wildflower fields. The center itself explores the different sides of how these fields are used from research to informational displays for visitors. The curved forms are derived from the organic nature of the site and create spaces to gather and explore Shell Creek.

STRAINED RELATIONS GALLERY

Professor Jeff Ponitz - 2012

A gallery addition to the historical former site of Marion Davies House in Santa Monica that tries to bridge the gap between the deep rooted history of the site and the modern clients of today. The two gallery spaces represent the opposing forces and the facade and structural system serve to mesh thetwo figuratively and literally together.

In Collaboration With Samantha Aisawa and Alex Alvarez

Professor Brent Freeby - 2012

This design-build project strived to evolve out of the given site and create a new and intriguing addition. The fluid ribbons create intrigue and draw the eye across the site as well as the observer to interact with the unappreciated space.
